Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

57 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the funding available to the social employment scheme for 1993; if he will give comparative figures for the years 1990 to 1992; if he has any plans to increase the funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I recently secured an additional £13.5 million in Exchequer funding for the social employment scheme (SES) bringing the total projected expenditure thereon to £97.311 million this year.

This compares with expenditure on the scheme of £73.954 million in 1992; £68.943 million in 1991 (of which £59.545 million was Exchequer funded) and £63.429 million in 1990 — of which £50.285 million was Exchequer funded. The Deputy will be aware that the scheme has not, since 1991, qualified for EC funding.

The practicalities and financial implications of expanding participation in such schemes, particularly in disadvantaged areas, is currently under consideration.
