Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Rural Resettlement Programme.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

83 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he has had discussions with representatives of Rural Resettlement (Ireland) Ltd.; if he has received a request from that organisation for a revolving fund of £5 million; and if he will give favourable consideration to the request.

I have had discussions with representatives of Rural Resettlement Ireland Ltd. on a number of issues, including a proposal for a special revolving fund of £1 million. In these discussions, the attention of the organisation has been drawn to the potential, in furthering their resettlement programme, of a number of existing schemes, particularly shared ownership, the voluntary housing schemes and the scheme of improvement works in lieu of local authority housing. The proposed revolving fund, which would involve the company in the purchase and selling on of property, would require particular skills and resources and carry a significant degree of risk. In all the circumstances, it has been indicated to the company that the proposal should be deferred pending experience in the use of the existing schemes.
