Vol. 432 No. 8

Written Answers. - Female Sterilisation Procedures.

Ivor Callely

Question:

102 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will give a list of the hospitals that carry out female sterilisation procedures; if the criteria for such procedures varies from hospital to hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following is a list of public hospitals which provide tubal ligation services: Rotunda; St. James's; Adelaide; Meath; Coombe; Holles Street; Portlaoise General; Mullingar General; Limerick Regional; Monaghan General; Cavan General; Letterkenny General; Sligo General; South Victoria, Cork; Cork Regional; Erinville Maternity, Cork; Tralee General; Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe; University College Hospital, Galway.

Sterilisation is a matter for decision by the patient concerned in conjunction with her consultant. Where such a procedure is not available at a particular hospital, the patient has the right to ask her hospital consultant to refer her to a hospital where the procedure is available.
