Vol. 433 No. 1

Written Answers. - Entitlements of Adopting Mother.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

129 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Social Welfare the entitlements of a mother who adopts a child; and if she is entitled to leave for maternity care.

An adopting mother is entitled to child benefit in respect of her adopted child. If she is in receipt of a social welfare payment, she is entitled to receive a child dependant allowance in respect of the child.

Proposals for the introduction of legislation to provide for adoptive leave have been approved by the Government. The Minister for Equality and Law Reform hopes to introduce the necessary Bill in the next session of the Dáil.
