Vol. 433 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Places Provision.

Tony Gregory

Question:

257 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education her views on the shortage of school places for dyslexic children, in view of the fact that one of the two Dublin schools catering for them has 120 applicants for 38 places this year; if she has any plans to open new facilities for the children; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Mary Harney

Question:

282 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that the Catherine McAuley Special School in Baggot Street has received 120 applications for 38 places, she will acknowledge the need for extra places, at this type of school, especially in view of the circumstances of a person (details supplied) who is unable to obtain a place at this school for September 1993.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 257 and 282 together.

I am aware of the difficulties to which the Deputies refer. The question of providing additional facilities in this area is being urgently examined within my Department at present.

In relation to the specific case referred to by one of the Deputies, while the pupil concerned was not successful in obtaining a place from September, enrolment of the pupil will be reconsidered if any vacancies arise in the school in September 1993.
