Liz McManus

Question:

22 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if it is intended to implement the recommendation of the Green 2000 report that a comprehensive national energy conservation programme should be established at an early date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Helen Keogh

Question:

23 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the progress, if any, which has been made in promoting energy conservation measures as promised in the Programme for Partnership Government 1993-1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 22 and 23 together.

I agree with the recommendation of the Green 2000 report on the establishment of a comprehensive National Energy Conservation Programme. This is in fact recognised in the Programme for a Partnership Government, which identifies the promotion of energy conservation in all sectors of the economy as an important priority.

A range of measures on energy conservation is already in place and these will be strengthened. An analysis is currently being carried out to identify where future initiatives can have the greatest impact on consumption and the pattern of energy supply.
