Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Publication of Private Telephone Call.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

57 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of a number of recent controversies over the use in the media of the contents of private telephone calls, her attention has been drawn to the fact that what purported to be the substance of a conversation between a Dublin solicitor and a well known Irish business woman, was published in The Sunday Tribune on 4 April 1993; if the Gardaí have been asked to investigate as they did in another instance when the actual content of a telephone call between two Members of the Oireachtas was published in another newspaper; and the action, if any, she proposes to take in this regard.

I am aware, as are the Garda authorities, of the newspaper article to which the question refers. In order for the Garda authorities to investigate whether there has been a breach of the law in such cases it is necessary that a complaint be made to them by a person allegedly affected. I am informed that no complaint has been made in this instance.
