Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - Services for the Mentally Handicapped.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

125 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health if he will provide funding for staffing of a house at Ballybane County Galway for the Galway Association for the Mentally Handicapped.

An additional £8.5 million has been made available in 1993 for the development of services for people with mental handicap. Of this figure, £4 million has been allocated to the health board regions, of which £158,000 has been allocated to the western region.

The Western Regional Mental Handicap Co-ordinating Committee has agreed that the additional funding of £158,000 be used to consolidate the funding base for services currently funded by ESF funds of both the Galway County Association and the Western Care Association. The priority to be attached to the funding of a particular service such as the staffing of a house in Ballybane is a matter for the Regional Mental Handicap Co-ordinating Committee. This matter will be determined by the committee in the light of any additional resources made available in 1994 and future years.
