Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Medical Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

132 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health whether he has satisfied himself that school medical examinations are carried out with a sufficient degree of regularity; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In 1990 under the school medical services a total of 1,874 schools were visited and the total number of children examined at school health examinations was 125,795. Of these, 51,429 were examined at new entrants examinations, 55,005 at selective examinations and 19,361 at other school health examinations.

Since the introduction of the scheme substantial developments have taken place in maternity and child health services. In addition under the GMS medical services and choice of doctor are available free of charge to lower income groups. The school medical service is under continuous review within my Department.
