Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tubbercurry (Sligo) School Transport.

Edward Nealon

Question:

149 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that her Department has informed Tubbercurry Number 2 (Church of Ireland) national school, County Sligo Role Number 12166 that its school transport might be withdrawn at short notice if the numbers fall; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that the long established transport service is based on an existing quatrian or designated area no longer relevant to the local Church of Ireland community, that adjustments within that area without extending the route would ensure that the necessary number of children would be using the bus to retain the service; and that the removal of this service would not only create major hardship leaving enrolment figures in a very precarious situation but would, most serious of all, have implications for the future of the school which is so important to the community; if she will have these matters examined; if she will sanction the minor adjustments needed in the bus route; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have sanctioned the minor adjustment requested and am prepared to continue the service for as long as there is no increase in cost or decline in the number of eligible children being conveyed daily.

Any further adjustments would be major and would involve considerable extra cost to a service which is already very expensive relative to the norm nationwide.
