Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - Guidance Teacher Posts.

John Bruton

Question:

152 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the present state of progress in regard to the fulfilment of the commitment in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress for the recognition of an ex-quota basis of 0.5 per cent of a wholetime post for a guidance teacher in secondary, community and comprehensive schools with pupil numbers between 350 and 499; and when this commitment will be fully honoured.

The Programme for Economic and Social Progress provides for the introduction of a phased programme, starting in 1992-93 and for completion in 1994-95, to provide for the recognition on an ex-quota basis of 0.5 of a wholetime post for guidance in secondary and community/comprehensive schools in the 350-499 enrolment category.

This commitment is being met in full. One third of the schools in the enrolment category received the appropriate allocation for the 1992-93 school year. A further third have been given the allocation for the 1993-94 school year and the remainder of the schools in this category will receive the allocation for the 1994-95 school year.
