I am at present in the process of formulating a museum policy. This policy will include the creation of an autonomous structure for the National Museum under a board of management and the encouragement, in association with the local authorities, of the development of a county museum structure. I am also addressing the problems of the lack of space for exhibition and conservation requirements of the National Museum itself.

With regard to museum facilities in Cork, I understand that the museum operated by Cork Corporation is of a very high standard and has held exhibitions of artefacts lent from the National Museum. Indeed the National Museum is committed to the development of museums under the auspices of local authorities.
