Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Release of Juvenile from Custody.

Tony Gregory

Question:

186 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the action, if any, she has taken following the release from court of a 15 year old girl (details supplied) who was refused by Oberstown House, for whom there was no secure detention centre available, and who was returned to the streets against her own express wishes on two occasions, in view of the fact that the district justices involved expressed grave concern both for the safety of the girl and that of the general public since the girl was a regular offender.

I have read with concern the reports in relation to this case. The overriding consideration is what should be done in the best interest of the person concerned and I have, therefore, directed my Department officials to meet with the other responsible Departments in this matter — Health and Education — immediately with a view to taking appropriate action, including the provision of suitable accommodation.
