Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Private Bog Development Grants Scheme.

Michael Noonan

Question:

329 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will introduce grant-aid for the development of private bogs; and his policy on the matter.

The Private Bog Development Grants Scheme which was introduced under the Turf Development Act, 1981 was terminated in 1987. The scheme achieved its main purpose which was to stimulate the development of private peat resources as a source of fuel. This is demonstrated by the increase in production from this source to an average level of 1.5 million tonnes per annum. There are no plans to re-introduce the scheme.
