Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment in Eastern Health Board Area.

Noel Ahern

Question:

353 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the number of persons on the Eastern Health Board waiting list for orthodontic treatment; the expected waiting time for each category of patient; the steps which are being taken to reduce the problem; the number of orthodontists employed by the board; and if additional orthodontists will be recruited.

The provision of orthodontic treatment is the responsibility of the Eastern Health Board in the first instance and I have asked the chief executive officer of the Eastern Health Board to reply to your questions directly as a matter of urgency.

In 1993 I allocated an additional £2 million for developments in the dental services as outlined in the Programme for Government including the development of orthodontic services. I will assist the health boards to further develop orthodontic services as resources become available to me.
