Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Saggart (Dublin) National School.

Eamon Walsh

Question:

337 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Education the position regarding the inquiry into matters pertaining to Saggart national school, County Dublin; the future prospect of this important rural national school in Dublin South West developing and serving Saggart and a wide catchment area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the inquiry referred to by the Deputy, is the report I requested from my Department's inspectorate in May 1993. The report, which was in the form of an internal report for the information of senior officials of my Department, was requested in order to assist in arriving at a decision on the teaching staff numbers warranted at the school. Should the school develop and enrolments increase in the future, the question of the teaching staff numbers may be reviewed under the normal regulations applying.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment on 30 September of the previous year. In the case of St. Mary's national school, Saggart, County Dublin, there were 92 pupils enrolled in the school on the 30 September 1992. This enrolment warrants a staff of principal plus two assistant teachers for the 1993-94 school year. The school also has the services of a remedial teacher on a shared basis.
