Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointment.

Michael Noonan

Question:

401 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education when she will sanction the appointment of an extra teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of national schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school at 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolments in the school referred to by the Deputy on 30 September, 1992 was 227 pupils which warrants a staffing of Principal and seven assistants for the current school year.

The only departure from this arrangement is in the case of maximum class size guidelines as set down by my Department being breached. The distribution of classes in the current school year may be organised among the present teaching staff so that no class is in breach of the maximum class size guidelines.

Accordingly, the apointment of an additional assistant teacher may not be sanctioned at this stage.
