Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teachers.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

405 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to appoint a remedial teacher to Cloghan National School, Cloghan, County Offaly; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

434 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education the reason she has not allocated a remedial teacher for Larah National School, in view of the fact that there are 101 pupils on the roll; if she will appoint a part-time remedial teacher; and when she will make such an appointment.

In the current year, I have announced the appointment of an additional 86 remedial teachers, bringing the total now in place to 1,032.

These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need, following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

Unfortunately, the schools mentioned by the Deputies have not been selected on this occasion. However, I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years. The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputies, will be considered in this context.
