Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Schools.

Richard Bruton

Question:

108 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education whether a review of the curriculum in special schools for children with an intellectual disability has been undertaken; and if she will give details of the system operated by her Department to ensure that a good standard of education is available in our special schools.

The curriculum in special schools for pupils with an intellectual disability is based on the assessed needs of the pupils concerned, using as a resource the Primary School Curriculum. Guidelines on the main areas of curriculum provision have been provided in relation to pupils with moderate mental handicap.

The general operation of special schools, including the standard of education which is provided by them, is monitored by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. Inspectors visit these schools on a regular basis and provide reports to the Department in relation to the educational service which they provide.

The Special Education Review Committee, which was set up to report and make recommendations on the educational provision for children with special needs, is to submit its report to me in the very near future. The question of whether a review of the curriculum in special schools for children with an intellectual disability should be undertaken will be considered in the context of the committee's recommendations.
