Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Prevention of Flooding in Carlow Town.

John Browne

Question:

34 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for the Environment when he will approve the submission by Carlow Urban Council regarding the prevention of flooding in Carlow town.

A submission was received in my Department last August seeking road grant assistance to build training walls along sections of the River Barrow in Carlow town. Having regard to the limitations on the funds available to me in the current year, and the grant allocations already made, I am not in a position to provide a special grant for the works and I will be advising the local authority accordingly. Quite apart from this, it is clear from the submission that before the proposed work could be undertaken, it would be necessary to consider the possible implications for flooding in other areas. It is also clear that the long term solution to the problem in Carlow may involve arterial drainage works and/or a separate storm water system; I understand that the local authority is currently seeking to progress consideration of such measures.
