Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Nenagh (Tipperary) Bypass.

Mary Harney

Question:

37 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment the route he has selected for the Nenagh by-pass; the amount of money that has been allocated for the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Where, as in the case of Nenagh, it is accepted in principle that a national road bypass is necessary, it is a matter for the local authority, in the first instance, to select a route for that purpose. Last July, Tipperary (North Riding) County Council, following an evaluation of all available options by an expert team, submitted a proposal for a bypass of Nenagh on a route to the north of the town. This proposal, which was not in accordance with the recommendations of the expert team, has been the subject of correspondence with the council and their recent response to queries raised by my Department is now being considered.

To date, road grants totalling £275,000 have been notified to the council to meet planning and other preliminary costs relating to the proposed bypass.
