Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Athy (Kildare) Relief Road.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

44 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make provision in the 1994 Estimates to construct a relief road for Athy, County Kildare, to re-route heavy traffic away from the town centre and, in particular, to avoid major traffic congestion and serious danger to life during the course of the sugar beet campaign, during which huge volumes of beet are brought by road through Athy to Carlow.

Having regard to the funds likely to be available for improvement works on national secondary routes generally in the years immediately ahead, I cannot give any commitment at this stage in relation to the financing of an Athy relief road.
