Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste Disposal Facility.

Peter Barry

Question:

89 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if, in line with EC requirements, it is proposed to establish a toxic waste disposal facility in the country, if so, the studies, if any, that have been carried out or commissioned about its siting by his Department; the technology that will be used; the degree to which it would be environmentally friendly; if local communities at any selected site will first be consulted; the approximate cost of such a facility; the amount of EC help that will be forthcoming; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While various internal and commissioned studies have been carried out in relation to Irish hazardous waste requirements, particularly in the incineration area, none of these have addressed the question of a specific site for a disposal facility. I now intend that updated proposals in this area should await the completion of post-1993 Operational Programme for Environmental Services and a seminar on hazardous waste requirements which my Department will jointly organise with Trinity College, Dublin in January 1994.
