Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Waste Management-Planning.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

157 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment whether he proposes to take any measures to ensure the operation of an efficient, safe and cost-effective waste management and disposal plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Wexford): At present, local authorities are responsible for the planning, organisation, authorisation and supervision of waste operations in their functional areas. It is intended to bring forward proposals in the context of the forthcoming Waste Bill which will, inter alia, clarify and update the role of local authority waste management plans and significantly extend the role of the Environmental Protection Agency in relation to waste management and planning.
