Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

163 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself as to the adequacy of funding available to local authorities for repair and maintenance of main roads, county roads or roads other than national primary and national secondary routes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While improvement and maintenance of non-national roads is primarily a matter for local authorities, substantial discretionary grants are provided annually by my Department to supplement the local resources devoted to such works. Under the National Development Plan, increased investment throughout the country in regional and local roads of importance to economic activity is proposed. Total investment, from Exchequer and EC sources, is to be £475 million between 1994 and 1999.
