Written Answers. - Single Market.

Peter Barry

Question:

16 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the action, if any, he proposes to take to adopt the European laws required for the introduction of the Single Market; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Ireland has the worst record next to Greece in this regard.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

38 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the reason Ireland is so slow in putting in place legislation on the implementation of the EC Single Market; and the steps, if any, that will be taken to remedy this situation.

John Bruton

Question:

42 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) which indicates that the European Community is to take legal action against a number of member states for failure to transpose Single Market legislation and that Ireland is one of the worst offenders in this regard; and if he will give the steps, if any, that the Government proposes to take to deal with this matter.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 16, 38 and 42, together.

The latest EC Commission report on the transposition into Irish law of Internal Market legislation shows that, to date, Ireland has implemented over 81 per cent of the agreed measures. The Government is very concerned to ensure that the remaining 39 measures are transposed as quickly as possible and that, in future, all new measures are dealt with by their due dates. All Ministers and Departments have been instructed to take the necessary steps to achieve this.
