Vol. 435 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourism Statistics.

Enda Kenny

Question:

21 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the up-to-date figures for Irish tourism for 1993; the way in which this compares to date with each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The latest tourism estimates available from the Central Statistics Office show that visitor numbers during the first six months of this year, at 1,355,000, were up 6 per cent on the same period last year, and that revenue earned in the first quarter, £171 million, was up 3 per cent on the same period of 1992. The tabular statement which I am circulating gives the comparative figures for the past three years.

In all the circumstances, given the difficult international climate, the Government is encouraged by the continued growth trends. It is confident that its plans for tourism for the last rest of this decade will substantially consolidate and build on these achievements.
