Vol. 435 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Licences for the Elderly.

Phil Hogan

Question:

69 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the fact that this is the Year of the Elderly, he will seek a medical certificate only in respect of the renewal of driving licences for elderly people rather than requiring them to go through the entire administrative procedure of completing the necessary renewal forms; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I do not propose to make any change in the requirements for renewing driving licences. A person over 60 and under 67 years of age may be granted a licence for the period ending on the day before the person's 70th birthday. A person of 67 years of age or over may be granted a three year licence subject to certification of fitness to drive for that period by a medical doctor. For persons aged 70 and over, regular medical certification outside of the licence application/renewal process would not be a practical arrangement and could give rise to enforcement problems.
