Vol. 435 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Dwellings.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

73 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment the action, if any, taken by his Department in relation to the five year plan in respect of local authority houses/flats submitted to his Department by Dublin Corporation some years ago.

Dublin Corporation requested funding from my Department for a planned maintenance programme for their rented dwellings in March 1989. As the management and maintenance of their dwellings, including planned maintenance, is a matter for the housing authority to be funded from their revenue resources, the Corporation's request could not be allowed. They were notified accordingly in June, 1989 and on a number of subsequent occasions. Substantial funds amounting to almost £36 million have, however, been allocated to the Corporation by my Department for major refurbishment works to designated projects under the remedial works scheme and also towards the provision of bathrooms/showers in their dwellings which lack them.
