Vol. 435 No. 2

Written Answers. - Exports to Britain.

Ivor Callely

Question:

86 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the value of Ireland's exports to Britain for each of the years from 1990 to 1992 inclusive; the support available to Irish exporters to improve their market share; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

According to the most recent material from the Central Statistics Office, the value of Ireland's exports to Britain for each of the years 1990 to 1992 inclusive are as follows:

Year

Value

£ million

1990

4,017

1991

4,008

1992

4,407

Despite a severe recession in Britain, Irish exports to Britain increased by almost ten per cent in 1992. I am confident that we can continue to perform well in this major market.
An Bord Tráchtála provides a range of services to help exporters, including a consultancy service to advise exporters on the long term prospects in the British market. In addition, it has three offices in Britain to assist Irish exporters to identify market opportunities and to convert these opportunities into sales. ABT also organises Irish participation in a number of major British trade fairs each year and brings large numbers of British buyers to Ireland to meet potential suppliers.
