Vol. 435 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tooreen (Mayo) Schools.

Jim Higgins

Question:

97 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if a new primary school was approved for Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo in the early 1980s; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A new school was approved in principle in the case referred to by the Deputy in 1982. Planning proceeded to outline planning stage. However due to the necessity to reduce the capital allocation for the national schools building programme in 1988 the project lapsed. As a result my Department proceeded to grant-aid the upgrading of the existing building to bring it to a satisfactory standard. Whatever further work is deemed necessary in this context to the existing school building will be grant-aided by my Department.
