Vol. 435 No. 3

Written Answers. - European Agency for Evaluation of Medicinal Products.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

118 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the current status of Ireland's bid to become the location for the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products; if the recent lack of direction in the National Drug Advisory Board has had any adverse effect on the bid; the way in which the pharmaceutical industry is supporting his Department's efforts to secure a successful outcome; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is probably now aware, it was decided at the EC meeting of Heads of State on 29 October that this agency should be located in the United Kingdom. The Irish Government made strong representations in regard to the merits of Ireland as the location, including the acknowledged reputation internationally of the National Drugs Advisory Board.

It may be noted that the meeting of 29 October also decided to site another EC institution in Ireland, viz., the European Office of Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection.
