Written Answers. - Irish Textbooks.

Liz McManus

Question:

78 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the limited range of textbooks through the medium of Irish, she will ensure that there is a broader range of material to provide for the growing number of children who are attending all-Irish schools.

With reference to the junior certificate, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has provided new syllabuses in most subjects and An Gum, the publications branch of my Department has published the relevant textbooks in Irish. The NCCA are preparing syllabuses for the remaining subjects and textbooks in Irish will be published subsequently.

The NCCA is currently re-examining the primary curriculum and also the structure and curriculum for the senior level in the post-primary schools. The publications branch of my Department will produce the relevant textbooks in the Irish language as these new syllabuses come on stream.

I am aware of the growing demand for textbooks for all Irish schools. The publications branch of my Department will make every effort to meet this demand within the resources available to it.
