Vol. 435 No. 6
96 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce restrictions on smoking in bars and coffee shops to protect members of staff and non-smoking customers from the passive inhalation of carcinogens.
The Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Regulations, 1990 were introduced under the powers granted to the Minister for Health by the Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Act, 1988. Under this legislation smoking is restricted to designated areas including coffee shops. These regulations, which were a first step in the introduction of environmental non-smoking policies, are currently under review.
