Vol. 436 No. 2

Written Answers. - Free Legal Aid Scheme.

Chris Flood

Question:

107 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the total amount of money paid out under the free legal aid system in respect of family law cases involving separation, barring orders and other family disputes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Civil legal aid and advice is provided mainly by solicitors in the full-time employment of the Legal Aid Board and the services of counsel are engaged as neccessary. Total expenditure by the board in the provision of legal aid and advice was £2.84 million in 1992. A breakdown of total expenditure on different types of cases is not available. However, I can say that the vast majority of the board's work — over 95 per cent — is in the area of family law.
