Vol. 437 No. 1

Written Answers. - Enniscorthy (Wexford) Drainage Scheme.

Ivan Yates

Question:

93 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the decision that the resurfacing works on roads in Enniscorthy town, County Wexford, to be included as part of the main drainage scheme which is currently underway, are not now to be undertaken; the way in which the decision was made; if £1 million which was to be spent for this purpose is now not committed to the area; and if he will have this matter reconsidered so that the roads and footpaths in question will be brought up to the highest possible standard.

As is the normal practice with water and sewerage schemes, the contract for Stage 2 of the Enniscorthy Main Drainage Scheme, which is now underway, includes provision for the full restoration of affected roadways. Enniscorthy Urban District Council, however, sought approval to more extensive road reconstruction work, including the provision of new footpaths, storm drainage and the under grounding of electricity and telephone services at a cost of over £460,000. In view of the nature and extent of these works, the Council was informed in May 1992, that the cost was not acceptable as a charge against grants. Consideration will, however, be given to any revised proposals which the Council may submit in respect of the affected roads.
