Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cork School Projects.

Peter Barry

Question:

197 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education if a list has been compiled of seriously substandard primary schools in County Cork; if so, if it corresponds to the INTO estimate of 16, the second highest in the country after Galway; the steps, if any, that are being taken to remedy the situation in County Cork; the location of the schools; their deficiencies; the costs in bringing them up to standard; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A list of major projects which will be included in future Primary Capital Programmes is currently being finalised and I will shortly be announcing details of the 1994 programme.

Major projects in County Cork which are currently at contract stage or where the contract will be awarded shortly are as follows: Tullylease, Killavullen, Cloughduv, Baltydaniel, Bandon Boys, Knocknamanna-Minane Bridge, Kilbritain, Dromina, Ballyclough. The total cost of these projects is estimated at £1.2 million.

Numerous improvement works of an emergency and minor nature are also carried out on an ongoing basis at various schools throughout the country.

In respect of both the major projects and improvement works the INTO survey has been a welcome addition to the information already available to my Department.
