Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - Post-Primary School Curriculum.

Ivor Callely

Question:

204 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if she has satisfied herself that the existing curriculum in post-primary schools prepares young people for their life ahead, relationships and possible parenting; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The existing post-primary school curriculum provides for instruction in relation to family life, the functions of the family roles and relationships in the family, management of the home, family budgeting and family support services.

In addition, my Department has issued guidelines to post-primary schools on the development of sex-relationships education.

The White Paper on education will contain a number of proposals for strengthening the role of the educational system in equipping students more effectively for life.
