Question:43 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the name and total number of persons licensed to sell wine in the towns of Castlebar, Westport, Ballinrobe, Newport and Belmullet; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Retail Licence Statistics.
Wine is permitted to be sold by holders of (a) wine retailers on-licences; (b) wine retailers off-licences and (c) spirits retailers on-licences. A wine retailers on-licence permits the holder to sell wine for consumption on or off the premises, while a wine retailers off-licence permits the sale of wine for consumption off the premises. A spirits retailers on-licence, the type of liquor licence held by publicans, hoteliers, etc., also permits the sale of wine for consumption on or off the premises.
Information on the lines requested by the Deputy is available only in respect of wine retailers on-licences and wine retailers off-licences. Records are not kept in a manner which would enable details of spirits retailers on-licences to be provided on the lines requested without the expenditure of an inordinate amount of official time.
