There are currently 479,433 families in receipt of child benefit in respect of 1,063,834 dependent children. Expenditure on the scheme was £219.1 million in 1992 and estimated expenditure in 1993 is £233.7 million.

Avril Doyle

Question:

54 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a person (details supplied) in County Wexford has been refused Christmas bonus and a free fuel allowance.

The Social Welfare Regulations provide that both the Christmas Bonus and the Free Fuel Allowance are payable to people in receipt of pensions and long term Social Welfare payments only. The person concerned is in receipt of Disability Benefit which is a short term Social Welfare payment and he therefore does not qualify for payment either of the Christmas Bonus or of the Free Fuel Allowance.

Avril Doyle

Question:

55 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a person (details supplied) in County Wexford is receiving only £43.50 unemployment benefit.

The person concerned has been in receipt of Unemployment Benefit since 7 May 1993. His rate of payment is based on his average earnings in the 1991/92 tax year. As his average earnings were less than £70 per week during that year, he is entitled to Unemployment Benefit of £43.50 a week.

As it may be more beneficial for the person concerned to be paid Unemployment Assistance, provided he can satisfy the means test, he has been advised to apply for same.
