Vol. 437 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Number on Live Register in Carlow.

John Browne

Question:

4 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Taoiseach the number of males and females signing on the Employment Exchanges at Carlow, Tullow and Bagenalstown, County Carlow, on 1 November for each of the years from 1991 to 1993.

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in a statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Notes: There is a discontinuity in the series because of revised statistical coverage from May 1992.

(Carlow-Kilkenny): I presume the figures are not in the Government's favour; otherwise we would get them. I know the figures have got worse. Can the Minister give me the percentage unemployed in Carlow as against the percentage unemployed in the country? Is the Minister worried that with the GATT set to do damage to the Carlow farmers we will have a worse situation?

I do not have the figures, but the Deputy has confirmed something I was told on coming into the House, never to ask a question unless one knows the answer.

Let us come to questions nominated for priority.
