Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Duties.

John Bruton

Question:

70 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if she has studied the consultant's recommendation made for reducing police paperwork in Britain; and if she will implement similar measures here.

It is one of my priorities to facilitate a reduction in the amount of Garda time taken up in paperwork, so that gardaí can devote more of their time to outdoor operational policing work. This is a key objective of the current information technology plan for the Garda Síochána. The resources needed to start implementing the plan are included in the law and order package which I announced to-day, following approval by the Government. It is a feature of the plan that information which is collected only once will be used for several different purposes and time-consuming manual procedures will be streamlined and automated.

With regard to the report mentioned in the question, I presume the Deputy is referring to the report entitled Opportunities for Reducing the Administrative Burden of Police Paperwork which was published in the UK in October. The group's recommendations are being examined to see what relevance they may have for operation of the Garda Síochána.
