Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - Galway Drainage Scheme.

Robert Molloy

Question:

88 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department did not reply until 16 November 1993, to a query dated 10 December 1992, from the European Commission in connection with the Galway main drainage scheme proposal as recently reported (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The dates referred to in the question relate to proceedings between the European Commission and the Department on foot of a complaint registered with the Commission by a third party. The environmental impact assessment of the scheme was completed in May 1993 and there was interim correspondence with the Commission prior to the Department's reply of 16 November 1993.

Separately from the above, an application for assistance under the Cohesion Fund for the Galway main drainage scheme was submitted to the Commission on 23 June 1993. In response to queries from the Commission, additional information was submitted in support of the application in August. Since then, there have been ongoing discussions-negotiations with the Commission in relation to various aspects of the application.
