Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - State Forestry Plantation.

Enda Kenny

Question:

118 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total extent of State and private forestry plantation in each county at present; the percentage area this represents; if he will give an estimate of the projected plantation over the next ten years; and if such acreage will warrant the provision of a second wood pulp mill in that time span.

I refer the Deputy to the Official Report of this House for 18 May 1993 (column 1951) when I set out the total area under afforestation in each county at the end of 1992. Data for 1993 will be available early next year. The total, 509,000 hectares, represents 7 per cent of the land area of the country.

The projected area afforested in ten years time will be approximately 760,000 hectares. I am satisfied that production forecasts for the next ten years will allow substantial expansion of the timber processing sector.
