Question:

60 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has established a National Committee to prepare for the 50 Anniversary of the United Nations; if so, the names of people appointed to such a Committee; and the terms of reference and the resources which are being made available to this Committee.

The 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995 will be an important milestone in the history of the Organisation and I can assure the Deputy that the question of marking it in appropriate ways in being actively considered in my Department. This includes consideration of the question of establishing a national committee for the purpose. As the Deputy will be aware, my Department has undertaken to keep the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs informed of developments in this regard.
