The figures quoted are in respect of original allocations notified to the health boards earlier this year. The allocation per head of population is calculated on the basis of the 1991 census of population.
It should be noted that these figures do not include expenditure on voluntary hospitals, directly funded homes for the mentally handicapped and payments made by the General Medical Services (Payments) Board. Because of this they cannot be compared to figures issued to this House earlier this year. It should also be noted that the allocation per head of population is an unweighted average and fails to take account of a number of important demographic and geographic factors. The difference in the cost of health care in each region is also influenced by other factors such as access to higher specialties, density of population and the present stage of development of the services.
