Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Berkley Road (Dublin) Neighbourhood Watch Committee.

Tony Gregory

Question:

254 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if, arising from her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 86 of 14 October 1993, she will give the outcome of her Department's examination of the request of the Berkley Road Neighbourhood Watch Committee as the problem at this location continues to be of serious concern to local residents.

My Department has concluded its examination of this matter, in consultation with the prison authorities, and a reply to the local residents issued on 17 January. The conclusion reached was that the proposal put forward by the residents could not be proceeded with as it would have security implications for St. Patrick's Institution. I should add that the area around the perimeter of the Mountjoy complex is patrolled by gardaí on a regular basis. Any undesirable activity in this vicinity is obviously a matter of concern and the attention of the Garda Commissioner has been drawn to the matter.
