Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Enforcement of Road Traffic Laws.

Peter Barry

Question:

265 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the large number of unlicensed and untaxed vehicles on the road, which imposes a severe monetary penalty on properly insured and taxed drivers, she will extend the successful Garda Christmas campaign to trap offenders; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the intensified enforcement of road traffic laws at Christmas extended to all road traffic offences. In addition, there is an ongoing and rigourous enforcement of road traffic laws throughout the year.

As regards the offences mentioned by the Deputy, the Garda have informed me that there were 70,556 prosecutions for insurance offences and 116,132 prosecutions for motor tax offences in 1992 (the last year for which figures are available).
