Written Answers. - Economic Status of Students.

Question:

296 Mr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of students who emigrated, got jobs or joined the live register in each of the years 1992 and 1993.

The best available sources of statistical information relating to the economic status of students are the annual school leavers survey which is published by my Department and the annual survey of first destination of award recipients in higher education which is published by the Higher Education Authority. The latest published information from these surveys relate to the academic years 1989/90 and 1990/91 in the case of the school leavers survey and to the calendar year 1991 in the case of the Higher Education Authority survey.

The following are the main findings from the survey of second-level school leavers for the academic years 1989/90 and 1990/91, which were surveyed, respectively, one year later in 1991 and 1992:

These figures have recently been revised and differ only slightly from those originally published except in so far as the numbers recorded as "emigrants" have been reduced from 8.1 per cent to 5.1 per cent, and 8.4 per cent to 4.3 per cent, respectively, for the survey years 1991 and 1992.
The following are the main findings from the Higher Education Authority's Report on the First Destination of Award Recipients in Higher Education (1991):

The reports of the surveys relating to the subsequent year in each case i.e., 1991-1992 in the case of school leavers and the calendar year 1992 in the case of award recipients in higher education, will be published later this year.
