Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - MOT Requirement.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

310 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has to introduce an MOT requirement; when this will become law; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

EC Council Directive 91/328 of 21 June 1991 requires those member states, including Ireland, which do not have in operation a system of regular roadworthiness testing for cars to have such a system fully operational by 1 January 1998. National Regulations will have to be made to implement the Directive in Ireland. In line with the Programme for a Partnership Government, I am preparing proposals for such Regulations. However, I cannot at this stage indicate when testing will be introduced.
